Captain Nitish Samantaray bagged six wickets in the second innings and 10 in the game to steer Odisha to a 10-wicket win over Assam on the third and last of their East Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 match here at Bidanasi Ground today. This was the third win for Odisha and fetched them seven points. Odisha finished third in the East Zone league with a total of 20 points from five games. Bengal topped the league table with 29 points, while Jharkhand and they finished second with 23 points.
After conceding a first-innings lead of 96 runs, Assam folded up for 122 in the second essay after resuming at the overnight score of 54 for four. Needing 27 runs for an outright win, Odisha accomplished the success without losing any wicket.
Odisha took the sizeable first-innings lead by mustering 319, in reply to 223 by Assam. Suman Kumar Das was the top scorer for Odisha, hitting a 123-ball 84, which included 13 boundaries and two sixes. Stumper Manas Ranjan Nayak was another successful home batsman, scoring an unbeaten 57. Pritish Raha Roy was most successful Assam bowler, taking six wickets for 78 runs.
In the second innings, Assam suffered a top-order collapse as four wickets fell for 18 runs. Nibir Daka and Denish Das created some hope for them, putting on 60 runs for the fifth wicket. But another collapse that saw them lose six wickets for 44 runs, resulted in the crushing defeat.
Earlier on the opening day, captain Nitish Sammantray and Shibasish Sahoo shared seven wickets them to enable Odisha restrict Assam to 223 in the first innings. Opting to bat first, Assam were in deep trouble, losing six wickets for 72 runs. However, they were able to muster a respectable total thanks to a half-century by Akash Chetri and his 69-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Praseer Changmai, who hit a breezy 49.
